Celebrating May Day!

A public meeting and social to celebrate May Day was organised jointly on Monday, May 6, by the New Communist Party of Britain and the Revolutionary Communist Party of Britain (Marxist-Leninist). It was jointly chaired by London representatives of NCP and RCPB(ML). Important main speeches were given by General Secretary of NCP Andy Brooks, and by National Spokesperson of RCPB(ML) Chris Coleman. Many other contributions from the communist and workers' movement deepened the discussion, including one from Workers' Weekly Health Group and another from Workers' Weekly Youth Group. A vibrant social and cultural programme was held in the evening. The following poem, written for the occasion, sums up the spirit of the day.

MAY

From the beginning, a rebirth,
Looking forward to the day when we will say what to do,
There is this initiative, but who has the scars on their backs?
Who still bears the scars in their soul?
Like a nightmare which they are destined to remember, remember.
Should May be the renewal?
The fresh May sun warming the fluttering flags?
Against the British lion, the imperial battles, the dreams of empire,
The strength of the initiative is to speak in the name of the people's collectives.
Not in solidarity, but here – as of right – making history.
Yes, we will unite, but not with half a mind.
The greening, the budding – after the planting.
We hold creation in our hands,
Not from nothing, but from a new beginning,
The seeds bursting out of the old,
Saying we are the leaders, we will stand on principle.
Rallying round by smashing the smoke and the mirrors,
The planned manoeuvres which are supposed to represent our traditions.
The whole of life is culture, the individual blossoming out
In harmony with, and encompassing,
The millions upon millions of voices.
Doing it yourself for the society which guarantees those rights.
May – the time is now to seize the initiative!
